New York City Experience– Day 2
February 3, 2008 at 4:50 am (Broadway, Ed Sullivan Theatre, Macys, NY vs. LA, bad stories, comedy, crappy hotels, fifth avenue, funny, humor, journal, marie chir, new york city, rockefeller center, saks fifth avenue, shopping, starbucks, times square, tourism, toy stores, travel, trump tower, vacation stories, walking)
Yesterday was rough. I had a terrible experience with the shuttle and I am still exhausted. I got about 8hrs of sleep but I’m still behind because I only got three hours the night before. My room is tiny but what can you expect when you’re staying in NYC on a budget? I had a very long day today but it was actually quite nice. I wish I was sitting in my bed watching TV but instead I am typing out this blog entry in a Starbucks that is across the street from Ed Sullivan Theatre. (I am being SUCH an English major right now.) I must say that today was the first time I lived in NYC. I was able to experience what it is like to live in this city and see if I could handle it. The verdict: Yes, I can.
The day started slow when I woke up at about 11am. I was exhausted. I got a shower to get the travel smell off me. Our bathroom is so small that every time I went to brush my hair I knocked everything off the shelves. The best is the hairdryer that is attached to the wall but won’t work unless you are holding down the “on” button that is also located on the wall. So, instead of being able to brush my hair as I dry it I instead have to dry my hair, brush then dry. My hair looks like crap and I put it into a ponytail even before we left the room. I am taking advantage of the free coffee we get at the hotel bar. That is the only benefit to our hotel besides the location. We are so close to Times Square…. I’m talking about two second walk to the Hershey Store! How awesome is that?! There is a Jamba Juice two blocks away along with about 5,000 Starbucks. I am looking out the window at a giant P. Diddy poster, an M & M TV screen and quite possibly the most ghetto flower shop I have ever seen. But you know what? I am in NYC and I’m not terrified. This is the first time ever that I have a good feeling about moving to this city and not freaking out. I know that the transition would be tough but this city is cool. I walked so far today because my friend and I wanted to do some uppity shopping on Fifth Avenue.
Fifth Avenue is amazing. My only mission today was to go to Rockefeller Center and that mission was eventually achieved. I however, did not have the most exciting time shopping because I am not one for shopping and browsing and all that stuff. I am one of those people that shops with a mission. I like to go into a store and see what I want and then purchase (simple as that). I hate looking around and trying things on. That takes too much time. My friend on the other hand likes to browse. I was very good at finding chairs and text messaging. My friend did have a very successful time shopping in Saks Fifth Avenue. She bought a very nice purse there. I bought a nice bag at H & M and a scarf.
I did get to go to my favorite toy store in the entire world! FAO Schwartz is the coolest toy store ever! Toy soldiers greeted us and when we walked in there were stuffed animals for days. I had never seen so many stuffed animals. Upstairs there was the famous keyboard on the floor made famous in the movie “Big”. I also saw dollhouses that cost more than my car. There was a room dedicated to Legos and there was even a life-size Chewbacca and SpongeBob! After we left the toy soldier greeted me again asking where I hailed from. I decided to chat it up with the soldier and commented on his terribly amazing British accent. We both had a good laugh. We decided to eat somewhere we both knew we liked. We decided on TGI FRIDAYS. You know I find it very clever that they double the prices of all the menu items. The meal was fine. It was actually the only meal I ate all day. The only other thing I had was a bottle of water from Starbucks and a piece of lemon loaf. It was delicious. I think because it was from the Trump Tower Starbucks. Haha.
So after dinner my friend and I decided to walk to Macys. I also bought my little sister’s present at Macys (This Macys is HUGE!). You know what’s funny about Macys? The fact that I worked for that company for over a year and was SCREAMED at when I didn’t say “outstanding” and offer to open a charge account and I go to the Mecca of all Macys and the service was atrocious. Like what the hell? The Macys was pretty badass though. They used the old escalators from the “Olden Days”. My friend hated them though because her heels kept getting stuck. I kinda thought it was funny. I wasn’t impressed with Macys overall because it was too big and very messy. I wanted to search through Jrs. and the area was over packed and unorganized. Maybe it’s the fact that I still hate the company that makes me so critical. I don’t know and I don’t care. Ok, so by this time my feet are killing me! We walked at least four miles (not counting what we walked in the stores). We ended up walking from Macys (on 34th street) back to our hotel that is located on Broadway. That was a bad decision. Both my friend and I are quite irritable and there were an insane amount of non-English speaking tourists and drunken bastards and bitches. It was a little too much to handle. I was also harassed by guys handing out ads for comedy clubs and all I wanted to do was get back to my hotel and watch TV! When we finally got back to the hotel, I turned on the TV and the cable was messed up. I then put on a DVD in my computer and thought I was done for the day and able to fall asleep. Needless to say, the internet in our hotel blows and we have been connecting to the CBS wireless. That now blows so here I am back in a goddamn Starbucks in my sweatpants and hoodie sipping on my green tea lemonade. I must say that the view makes it pretty awesome.
Therefore, the question is, “Can I live in NYC?” Financially it will suck. That’s a given, though. I think the city itself is amazing. I would much prefer this place than LA. LA is the next endeavor and I don’t think I am mentally prepared for that. Overall, today was awesome but I really need some sleep!!
