Did NBC Make the Right Decision?
For those of you who read this blog often you know that I am a HUGE Conan O’Brien fan. I couldn’t be happier that he will be the new host of the Tonight Show starting June 1, 2009. But, for some reason I cant help wonder what will become of the late night wars. There was so much controversy when Jay Leno got the Tonight Show spot over Letterman that I wonder what will happen when Letterman also leaves the late night game. There are rumors swirling that Jon Stewart will be taking over. I think that is a VERY smart choice on CBS’ end because Stewart definitely has a broader demographic than Letterman. But, what will happen to Late Night and all the hosts in the upcoming years?
Jay Leno is said to be one of the hardest working men in showbiz. I believe it because when he is not taping the Tonight Show he is out all around the country doing stand-up. I think there may be some animosity because Leno wanted to stay at the Tonight Show. Should he take an offer from ABC? There are rumors that they are willing to create an 1130 slot just for Leno to compete again Letterman (and Stewart) and Conan. Do you think that will really happen? I kinda do. I can tell that Leno is pissed at NBC. He isn’t exactly jumping at the chance to play second fiddle to O’Brien. NBC is said to have offered Leno a 1030 time-slot for an even early Tonight Show. I think NBC is so confused they don’t know what to do. They didn’t want to lose Conan because he is a huge draw in the 1230 slot but they cant afford to lose Leno. The problem is… Can Conan compete against Stewart and Jimmy Kimmel?
There are a lot of things about Conan O’Brien that make him commercially appealing. He is very funny but he is very honest and has a smart/asinine sense of humor. Will it fly in the 1130 slot, though? Conan is best know on college campuses and not so much around the water cooler. I think he has a definite shot at staying at number one. The only thing is that with Stewart coming to CBS that only means a much larger audience… he will be bringing all of his Comedy Central fans with him. Stewart has showed time and time again that he is a top comedian. I just think this late night wars round 2 will only help television. This will give more for the writers and the talent in front of the cameras. Jimmy Kimmel doesn’t stand a chance against Conan or Stewart and I think ABC is begnning to realize that. I think that is why Leno has so many offers pouring in because he knows that this situation can only benefit him.
What about the 1230 slot? Well… there is Kimmel (Blah), Craig Ferguson (he has his moments) and then NBC’s dumbest choice— jimmy (not funny) Fallon. What were you thinking NBC?! Fallon wasnt funny on SNL and he certainly does not have the talent to hold down his own late night talk show. The worst is that NBC realizes they made a terrible choice and decided that Jimmy Fallon will “try out” his late night show on Youtube before his big premiere. That is not a good sign. In this round…. NBC is bound to lose. Conan has a lot to live up to and Jimmy Fallon being named as his replacement did not help the situation.
So, what is in store for the 2009/10 Late night wars??? I don’t know but I will certainly be watching!
The Dark Knight Shatters Opening Weekend Records
Turns out the publicity for the Dark Knight was worth it. The Dark Knight made the highest grossing debut in history with 155.3 Million dollars in a 3 day period. It also captured the top one day gross with 66 million. Spiderman 3 was the previous record holder.
Is the Dark Knight Oscar Worthy?
I know that there is a lot of hype surrounding the new Batman film but is the praise justified? I was watching the Today Show the other day and they were mentioning that there is a great deal of “buzz” surrounding the movie. My question is– Is this because the film is very good or because of the death of one of the main characters (Heath Ledger)? I know that Ledger’s death was a surprise to everyone but is his performance really worthy of an Oscar or is this just hype to sell the movie? You be the judge.
I get a bit offended at the fact that there is such a buzz for this film because of Ledger. There are other actors in this film that deserve a great deal of praise as well. Christian Bale was an amazing Batman! I can only imagine he is better in the Dark Knight. Thank goodness Maggie G. was cast in this one. I couldn’t stand Katie Holmes!
The other thing about this film is how they are promoting it. People seem to think that just because Ledger’s joker character is plastered all over billboards that is what is the main selling point. Let’s remember the decent batman movies with Michael Keaton, shall we. Wasn’t the first Batman movie primarily about Batman? Yep. Then the sequels followed the villains. This is the same deal. The first Christian Bale Batman was to introduce that Batman. The Dark Knight is introducing the characters…. I.e. THE JOKER. The movie studios would have to promote this movie the same way if Ledger was still alive. I think Ledger’s performance will blow people away but I think it is a bit premature to talk Oscars. Oscar worthy movies are usually released during the holiday season. The only good point I heard about Batman being nominated was to raise the Oscar viewership. I think that is even a stretch. All I can say is The Dark Night looks amazing and you should all go see it.
** also, check out Entertainment Weekly for a great article about The Dark Knight
Brooke Hogan? Nick Hogan? Hulk Hogan? Linda Hogan? What’s up with the Hogans??
Brooke– I think she may be the only normal one out of this whole bunch. I read recently in an US Weekly interview that she is trying to make the best of the terrible situation. If you have been living under a rock for the past year, you should know that the Hogans went from VH1 reality ratings grabbers to jailbirds and cradle-robbers. Brooke has a new reality show premiering tomorrow on VH1 and from the previews it looks mildly entertaining. I think for the most part people will tune in just to see her mental state. Brooke said she is still very close with her father (Hulk) but doesn’t speak with her mother. She feels very uncomfortable around the idea of her mother dating one of Brooke’s schoolyard chums. It’s a bit gross. So why after all of this drama would she want to do a TV show? Well, I think the rest of her family answers that question…. Publicity whores.
Nick Hogan– He was showboat younger brother on Hogan Knows Best and now he is crying in a jailcell. Do I feel bad for Nick Hogan? Uhh…. NO! He was a douchebag on TV because he is one in real life. He was driving 80 mph with his buddy and crashed his car. His friend was a serviceman and now is on a respirator for the rest of his life. Nick is young, stupid and rich…. I don’t anyone else would have gotten a different sentence. Nick got what he deserved. I found it funny and disturbing that one a taped phone conversation with his father that he wanted his own reality show just like Brooke. Again, Publicity whores.
Linda Hogan– Cradle-robber. Simple as that. Oh and she wants all of Hulk’s money. Surprise there when on the show all she was doing was shopping. Linda and Hulk were married for 24 years until Linda secretly filed for divorce last November. That just shows her class. When you are in the public eye you need represent yourself with some class. Too bad Linda missed that memo. She no longer sees her daughter unless they are at the jail visiting Nick at the same time. Is a nineteen year old really worth losing your daughter? I guess for Linda Hogan it is.
HULK– Hulk is used to the public eye. He has been a staple in the wrestling world for years. This, however is different from the scripts of the WWE. Hulk is battling to save properties that he once shared with his estranged wife. He is also trying to mend a relationship between Brooke and Nick. So, Does Hogan Know Best? Turns out he is also dating someone substantially younger than him (not a 19 year old, though). This woman looks eerily like his ex. She is 32 with bleached blonde hair and tan skin that looks like leather. I just want to warn all you stars out there that reality TV is bad news. Stars need to be working on SCRIPTED shows and let reality TV just die. Is there hope for the Hogan family? I guess we will just have to watch and see.

MTV are You for Realz??!!
At work today, I read my bosses Entertainment Weekly during lunch. Nothing exciting, right? WRONG!!!!! I know that I wrote a couple weeks back about Britney Spears making another appearance on this years VMAs… well, turns out there is something that actually I would tune in to watch—- NSYNC REUNION!!!!! Oh, you heard me correctly. In this week’s EW, there is a HUGE rumor about Nsync possibly getting back together for this year’s show. All I can say is that if MTV makes this happen, there might be hope for the network yet.
Conan O’brien vs. Matt Lauer
There is an ongoing feud between these two NBC heavyweights and this is the video to prove it. If you haven’t been watching Late Night with Conan O’Brien this will catch you up. I don’t know about you but I am rooting for O’Brien.

Celebrity Couples.
I never understood why celebrities need to advertise who they are dating. The ones who post their affection all over the tabloids are the ones who end up breaking up months later. So why do these people set themselves up for failure? They’re celebrities. It’s what they do.
Example 1- Drew Barrymore and Justin Long (Dodgeball) recently broke up. I know, who cares. Well they displayed their affection in front of posh restaurants for the paps so they must have been promoting something. Turns out the two have a movie coming out later this summer appropriately titled, “he’s just not that into you”. Was this all a ploy? Were they really dating at all? Does anyone care? I think not. Next couple.
Example 2- Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were the pop king and queen until something happened to make Britney now a joke in the public eye. These two need to be cut a little slack, though. I think they started dating when they were 16 and broke up when they were 20. That’s not too bad seeing they only saw eachother at award shows. The only problem I have with this relationship is that I think the managers of the two had more to do with the publicity than Britney and Justin. Do you think agents and managers send their clients out to eat at the Ivy just so they can end up on the cover of US weekly? Hmmm… that’s a thinker.
Example 3- Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Jumping on couches and yelling about Scientology gets a man to the top of the Hollywood crazy list. Katie Holmes used to be so private and demur and now she is sucked into the world of Cruise. I think Tom celebrates his love a bit less now than before but I think he needs to focus a little more on making some more box office bombs and less on his Scientology propaganda. Leave WILL SMITH ALONE!
Example 4- Paris Hilton and whomever she is dating that week. Paris is famous because she is dumb, blonde and skinny. If she dates someone they become famous. I don’t understand or accept the Paris phenomenon because I think she is a piece of garbage. I have more respect for Nicole Richie and she was in rehab for god’s sake. Why are we so fascinated by these non-celebrity pieces of garbage?! I will never understand how she got so famous and why her alone is bringing down America’s IQ.
Celebrities who actually want their marriages to work move away from the glitz and glamour. You can tell who will make it and who won’t just by the number of public appearances they make together. It’s sad but I think the marriage success rate in Hollywood is about 10 percent… if not lower.
