Why Should You Care About Your Favorite Celebrities Political Views?

August 29, 2008 at 2:30 pm (2008 election, Funny stuff, Life in your 20's, Republican National Convention, blogging, celebrities at the DNC, culture, entertainment, funny, hollywood democrats, hollywood republicans, humor, mccain, music, obama, opinion, oprah and obama, politics, presidential election, television, the power of celebrity, think for yourself, views)

We are such a Hollywood-obsessed culture that it was only a matter of time that the celebrities would come out stomping for their favorite political figures. The DNC just wrapped last night and every news organization is applauding Obama for his speech…. Well, almost every news organization (i.e. Fox News… Surprise, surprise there). I constantly search through the Hollywood News every morning and I was surprised at the articles pertaining to the celebrities and politics. I know I shouldn’t be shocked to see that most celebrities are Democrats. Shocker there! But I was wondering why we, the American public should care who these celebrities support. Shouldn’t we be able to make that decision for ourselves or are we so impressionable as a culture that we need our favorite musician to tell us who would be best to run this country?

I will not disclose my political views because I feel that it has nothing to do with this particular article. I will say that the argument is a bit one-sided because Democrats are so dominant in Hollywood. I just wonder what the Republican Convention will hold when it comes to star power? Im sure ARNOLD will be there…. but who else is a Republican in Hollywood and do you think it will play any role having them on TV at the convention? I couldn’t help but laugh when I was reading some articles on ETONLINE.COM this morning. There was one showing Oprah in tears and Ben Affleck, JLO… and so many other celebrities “stomping” for Obama. But do you really think they care about Obama or were they just there to make a public appearance and show that they just care about the photographers and not the politics at all?

I love how celebrities are such posers when it comes to politics. They really think that people will care who they vote for. I know for a fact that there will not be as many celebrities out and about next week during the Republican convention… however, we have re-elected Bush. How beneficial were the celebrities on that regard? Maybe people choose who they want and say “screw the celebs!”? Do you really think Oprah, Ben Affleck, Scarlett Johannson, and all the others have any kind of impact on the elections? Nope. I think they are there for show. I know that I will not allow any celebrity (rep, dem, or other) have any kind of impact on my vote in November. Anyone who is influenced by a celebrity is an idiot. VOTE FOR WHO YOU WANT! NOT FOR SOMEONE JUST BECAUSE YOUR FAVORITE ACTOR TELLS YOU TO DO SO! This is America, People! Vote for who you want!

It’s That Magical Time of Year

August 24, 2008 at 5:42 pm (Funny stuff, Life in your 20's, advice, advice for college students, back to school, blogging, cathedral of learning, college freshmen, college life, culture, education, funny, funny advice for college students, humor, ipods, life as a college student, making friends at school, opinion, school sucks, stories, university of Pittsburgh)

This is the first fall that I will not be purchasing overpriced books and oodles of pens and pencils. My Starbucks addiction is in remission and I am not waking up with cold sweats worrying if I had an assignment in my history class. I gotta tell you, being an adult may have it’s shitty responsibilities but when you don’t have to worry about exams and professors with monotone voices teaching you algebra at 8 in the morning… life doesn’t seem so bad. Don’t get me wrong, I am a baffled at what I am supposed to do now that everyone is back to school. Oh, that’s right! I get to go to the playground everyday because I have the best profession ever! I am a nanny. Sure, I clean up poopy diapers all day…. But the next time you are sitting in class at 8 in the morning after trecking through the cold and piercing winds… imagine me sitting watching Nick Jr. and playing with stuffed animals with an adorable 1 year old.

I have to say that since I started this blog it has motivated me to keep writing. I write as much as i can but I really think some of my professors were full of it when they said once you leave school you wouldn’t write anymore because you wouldn’t have any motivation. Well, that’s bullshit. You are either motivated or not. Surely I was not motivated was I was taking certain classes. That happens to all of us. I mean, C’mon, who is going to be motivated reading 50 pages a day for sociology when there aren’t any exams and you can easily skim the material and write a 1 page double-spaced journal. Some professors choose not to motivate. Others choose to crush you from the get-go. I had my fair share of those, too. The best advice I can give to those incoming freshman is go to class, take notes and follow the syllabus. It’s as simple as that. If you don’t understand something… ASK YOUR PROFESSOR FOR HELP! If your professor is a douchebag then go to the dept. head. But, don’t assume the professor won’t help you. It’s your fault for failing if you don’t ask for additional help. Motivation is the student’s responsibility. However, the professors can surely crush that motivation with ridiculous assignments and harsh criticisms of your work. Believe me, I’ve been there.

Here is a brief list of all the things a college student can’t go without:

1. Your I-POD– I can’t tell you how many days I sat in the Cathedral of Learning (University of Pitt) jamming to my favorite songs while “Studying” for an upcoming exam.

2. Lap-top– All I can say is don’t wait until your Jr. Year to buy one. I made that mistake. My lap-top got me out of so many jams because I was able to escape from campus and regain my sanity sitting in Caribou Coffee reading articles on E! Online. Also, if you are taking a film class and need to watch a movie your lap-top is a great save!

3. Starbucks Gift Cards– I know, it’s so cliche that a college student is addicted to caffeine. It’s true. You have a lot of work to finish in a short amount of time. Red Bull was never my taste but Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Lattes always put a smile on my face.

4. Friends in class– You need to talk to your fellow classmates! If you are in a lecture hall, it’s a bit harder to chat with people. However, if you are in a Literature class… it’s great to make friends with the most artsy looking person in class. They usually wear thrift store clothes and smell of cigarettes and chai tea. They will help you out if you forgot to read your Shakespeare.

5. A place to study that isn’t your room– When finals come around or even when that big paper is due you need a place where you can actually work in peace. I always found that reading in a hallway when classes were in session was a perfect place. I also was able to write a lot of my papers and stories in Starbucks but I always sat in the very back and listened to music. When I wrote papers I listened to really mellow stuff… Usually Jason Mraz, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin.

If you have any other suggestions for the “Must- Have” college list please feel free to comment! Best of luck going back to school.  :)

Is Pop Music Making a Comeback?

August 2, 2008 at 2:36 am (Disney, Funny stuff, Hannah Montana, Life in your 20's, blogging, camp rock, culture, entertainment, funny, humor, jonas brothers rollingstone, miley cyrus and nick jonas, miley cyrus and the jonas brothers, miley cyrus vanity fair, music, nsync- the next generation, opinion, pop music, rollingstone, television, the jonas brothers, the jonas brothers and hanson, the jonas brothers are bringing back pop music, the jonas brothers ushering in the new age of pop music)

I sure hope so!! I am a huge pop music fan and if history teaches us anything it’s that pop music comes and goes in cycles. I think we are in the midst of a pop revolution… thank goodness. I am so sick of listening to the radio and only hearing the same Chris Brown, Flo Rida or whatever else is repeated. I think pop music is re surging into pop culture and I am pumped about it!

Why is it coming back? Well, because it’s awesome for one. Also, pop music seems to follow the trends of the country. We are in the middle of a hot election and change. This is going to make the country happier so our music will be happier. Hopefully the emo trend will vanish just like the Bush White house. The pop music cycle seems to begin with a pop “band”…. in the 1990s— Hanson. In the 2000s– the Jonas Brothers.

The Jonas Brothers are a hip– well, kindof, hip group of brothers that write and play their own music. I am a fan of the music because it is pretty catchy. Also, they are a quintessential part of the Disney equation. Disney played a role in the beginnings of some very famous names in the early 1990s and I have a feeling it will not be any different this time around. Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Christina Agulaira were just some of the Disney phenoms. Could the Jonas Brothers be next? Yep. They are already on their way with a Rolling Stone cover, their own issue of People magazine and merchandise all over Wall mart. Not to mention puppy love controversy between Miley Cyrus… I smell the next generation of Britney and Justin. Haha!

People think I’m crazy because I like pop music but i cannot be the only one. It comes back because it is catchy, fun music that makes people happy. I also listen to “angry” music when it’s necessary. But, I would much rather be happy than mad…. wouldn’t you? I just think that boybands could not be far behind this new-found pop revolution. Bye Bye Bye repeat radio stations! hello to catchy lyrics and awesome choreography!
